"CHRISTIANIA TRIAS POLITICA"

Christiania, Denmark 2005/6
3-channel video installation

The Freetown of Christiania was established on the site of a former military base outside Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1971 Christiania was declared a 'social experiment' by the Danish government and subsequently developed its own democratic system based on shared ownership of houses and facilities. Christiania now houses a maximum of 1000 people and various businesses and institutions.

In the context of the ‘Christiania Researcher in Residence Program’ (CRIR), approximately 30 residents were interviewed about their experiences with self-government and self-policing. Their stories form the basis of the 3-channel video installation, produced for the exhibition ‘Supervision’. Taken together these personal histories are structured around 3 themes based on the separation of powers, defined by the western democratic principle of ‘Trias Politica’. Part I deals with the legislature; part II with the judiciary; and part III with executive power.

From the archives of Christiania’s independent newspaper Ugespejlet, a selection of images, texts, and cartoons produced by residents over a 35 year period was made. Representing the various conflicts, acts of violence and power struggles that took place, these materials present a specific picture of life in Christiania.
