"RED, ORANGE, YELLOW"

Pilot Projekt Gropiusstadt
Berlin, 2006

Between 1962 and 1975, the
residential city ‘Gropiusstadt’,
mastermined by Walter Gropius, was
built at the most Southern edge of
former West Berlin. The high-rise
area today houses around 40.000
people and has a questionable
reputation. Famously, it is where
Christiane F, the child described
in ‘Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo’
grew up.

The Pilot Projekt Gropiusstadt
invites artists and researchers
with an interest in city planning
and architecture to spend a week
in a Gropiusstadt apartment.
Some of the research becomes a
proposal for a work for the city’s
public spaces.

Red, Orange, Yellow consists of
a series of photographs of local
election posters in Gropiusstadt.
Typically featuring a portrait of
each party’s candidate for the
area, they contrast with the
deserted and ‘faceless’ cityscape.
Each political candidate was
interviewed and asked to explain
the political principles of their
respective parties and to defend
or criticise the Gropiusstadt
(as a concept) from those
principles.

‘Red, orange, yellow’ refers
to the campaign colours of the
4 most popular parties:
SPD and PDF (red), CDU (orange)
and FDP (yellow).

"EXTRA SECURITY"

London 2004

video, 5 min. 40 sec.

On a winter day in 2004, the
actor Luigi Mashall was employed
to double up with people who
supervise streets and public
spaces in London.

As an Extra Security guard,
he was dressed in standard black
shoes and trousers, white shirt,
clip-on tie, 'Nato' sweater,
padded jacket and high visibility
vest. Logo's were printed on
clothes and epaulets and on an
ID-badge. Police officers,
‘colleagues’ from security
companies, as well as other
street workers came up to him
for a chat and many passers-by
stopped him to ask for directions.

The work was made in the context
of the Beck’s Futures 2004
competition.

"ON IKI SAATLIK"

Istanbul, 2003

video 6 min 13 sec

On the longest day of 2003, two
men were employed to spend 12
hours in the streets of Istanbul
doing nothing.

The team, recruited from the job
ads in a local newspaper, was
called ‘On Iki Saatlik’
(’twelve hours of...’) dressed
in outfits with special logo’s
and false I.D. cards. As real-life
guards, they perfectly mastered
the manners and movements of
professional time-passers.

Their uniforms, made to order in
a shopping centre, were of
standard cut and colour and made
them ideal universal street
supervisors. They became traffic
police officers on busy crossings,
trade officers (‘Zabita’) at a
market square, boat attendants
on a ferry. The public reacted
to them accordingly.

The work was made druring
a 4-month residency at
Platform Garanti, Istanbul

Special thanks to Ilhan Sayin.

"MUTE"

'Hotel New York', PS1 Center for Contemporary Art, New York, 2000

Series of solo performances in a project initiated by Jeanne van Heeswijk and curated by Alice Smits.

In ‘Mute’, a silent 40-minute video was accompanied live with speech. The video was a compilation of
12 American TV programs including the X-files, Friends, Southpark and The Jerry Springer Show. Although the programs were cut up in clips, it was possible to follow the different story lines.
