PRIX DE ROME 2009

Witte de With, Rotterdam 2009

Three-channel video installation, inkjet print

Five experts discussed the possiblities for ‘active listening’ from scientific, political and commercial view points, at Theater Frascati, Amsterdam, in March 2009. They illustrated their points with short video clips.

Afterwards, the members of the audience were asked to leave their phone numbers. In the week following the event, an interviewer called up to ask them about what they remembered hearing, seeing and experiencing on the night. Twenty-seven people gave a telephone interview, of between 5 and 45 minutes in length.

From their recollections, a script for a reconstruction of the event was compiled. Three staged debates, entitled 'The Power of Listening' took place at the same venue, in May 2008.

In the Prix de Rome exhibition, these performances were announced with a large theater poster. In the same installation, sound clips of the telephone interviews were played simultaneously with sound recordings of the performance rehearsals. Subtitles to these two slightly varying versions of the same text, were projected onto opposite walls.

On a monitor, the pre-recorded video clips were shown, as they appeared in the chronology of the script. The exhibition room was, as in the audience section of the first meeting and the performances, filled with blue theater light.

The Power of Listening was awarded the first prize of Prix de Rome 2009, the national award for visual artists in Holland.
